Born
in Hong Kong, guitarist Man-Bun Au began his formal
guitar training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing
Arts. After the graduation from the HKAPA, he
received scholarship to continuo his studies in
the US where he studied under Professor James
Smith, William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar
Quartet, and Brian Head at the University of Southern
California, USA and received his Bachelor and
Master Degree in Guitar Performance. Au has received
scholarship to participate the Festival “Musica
en Compostela” where he studied with Jose Luis
Rodrigo and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada where
he studied with Bruce Holtzman. Au has played
in masterclasses with renowned guitarists, such
as Pepe Romero, Angel Romero, the Los Angeles
Guitar Quartet, David Russell, Manual Barrueco,
Eduardo Fernandez, Eliot Fisk, and Oscar Ghiglia.
Au has been the member of the USC Guitar Quartet.
After his graduation, he was invited to collaborate
with “Zephyr: voice unbound”, a Los Angeles based
chamber choir and performed through Southern California
including in television Channel 5 KLTA and KPFK
Los Angeles. In Hong Kong, Au has performed at
the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Chinese
University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology. Au has also been invited
by RTHK as the featuring artist of the program.
He has given premiere performances for compositions
by Lo Hau Man, Stephen Hartke and Bryan Johanson.
Au has been teaching at The Hong Kong Academy
for Performing Arts Junior Division. He is currently
teaching music history and analysis at the School
of Continuing Studies at the Chinese University
of Hong Kong.
